Hong Kong Specialties: Dried noodle with minced pork sauce and Shanghai Dumpling Set

Hawker Centre: Hong Kong Specialties, Armara Building Food Court

Shanghai dumpling

Soup and dumpling that is part of the set

Dried noodle with minced pork sauce

Jasmine's comments:
  1. Although the name says its HK specialty food but not sure is the name relevant to the food they served as it is all Shanghainese food.
  2. This set costs SGD6, not only it is value for money but also delicious.
  3. Dumpling sticks to the paper, so extra care is needed when picking up the dumpling so that the soup can be retain within when eating it.
  4. Noodle is handmade on the spot.
  5. Sauce given, is more than enough to go with the bowl of noodle and it is not salty.

Lian Seng Garden Hawker Center: Glutinous rice ball with peanut paste

Hawker Centre: Lian Seng Garden Hawker Center, Kluang, Johor.
Next to the Kluang's marketplace (Pasar Awam Kluang).

Glutinuos rice ball with peanut filling
The compact peanut paste with very little sugar, good for the health conscious people

Comments:
  1. Soup, although negligible by most people, it is what that completes the whole experience of enjoying this dessert during winter times in olden days. This soup has very strong ginger flavour and I don't mean just the flavour but also the spiciness as well. Once tasted, you will know that the broth is made with lots of real ginger, not ginger powder.
  2. The skin of the rice ball is chewy and taut, not soft and mushy.
  3. When chewed, the filling does not flow out as it is packed with lots of peanut butter, thus contaminate your clear broth.
  4. Another point to note is that the filling consists of mostly just peanut powder with very little sugar, so it is not sweet.

Dessert House: Lemongrass Pork Chop Rice

Restaurant: Hong Kong Dessert House, Mid City Centre Arcade, Bourke St, Melbourne 3000, Australia

Comments:
  1. Best grilled pork chop ever. I have tried so many other pork chops after leaving Melbourne but none came close. Fragrant with lemongrass, without being salty.
  2. Comes with a nicely fried egg (I usually avoid fried eggs, but can't resist this one) and chopped spring onions.
  3. They do have the chicken option too, which is good, but not as fantastic as the pork.
  4. The place is usually crowded but definitely worth the queue.

Super Kitchen Restaurant: Chilli Pan Mee

Restaurant: Restoran Super Kitchen, Kota Damansara
Near Pappa Kopitiam and Opposite Damansara Pan Mee In Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara

Before mixing
After mixing
the accompaniment to your bowl of noodle.

Jasmine's comments:
  1. Chilli flake paste is the restaurant's own special concoction that is readily available on all tables.
  2. Spicy. Only if you are greedy and add lot of the chilli flake paste.
  3. Very salty. Even without the chilli paste, the bowl of noodle itself is salty.
  4. The idea of throwing in half boil egg is very appealing, to me.
  5. The taste will be better if it is less salty.
  6. It is served together with a bowl of soup with 2 meatballs.

Men-Tei Ramen: Shio

Restaurant: Men-Tei, 61 Robinson Road, #01-01 Robinson Center

Comments (Updated):
  1. Damn good clear soup. Shio is "salt-base".
  2. Cha-shu melts in your mouth. Always go for additional toppings.
  3. Noodles are home-made and chewy. Doesn't taste like instant noodle (like at some other ramen shop).
  4. Apparently, ingredients are fresh and flown daily from Japan. Apparently.
  5. With other soup base (e.g. tonkatsu, miso) sure there are better options ... but for Shio this is the best.
